A bit of chaos

Naples. A missed train. Three hours to kill.

I left my bag at the luggage drop and walked up toward the Quartieri. Narrow alleys, laundry strung between balconies like festival banners when there is no festival, the smell of espresso brawling with fried street food.

Then down toward the water, down to Santa Lucia.

An old man was sitting on his doorstep with a fishing net across his lap. He gestured for me to sit down, with that warmth of ours where any stranger is just a cousin you have not seen in years. We ended up talking about the sea, old stories, and how a needle, patience, and a touch of everyday philosophy are all you need to mend a tear without throwing the whole thing away.

Of that entire journey, in the end, those three hours are all I remember.

We are good at making plans, maybe too good. We spend our lives neatly checking off boxes. Degrees, career moves, life-defining choices, building ourselves a very comfortable cage without even noticing.

When really, all it takes is a little bit of chaos. Dropping the obsession with timing every single minute. Turning down an unfamiliar alley, discovering a hidden corner, and missing the train once in a while. Maybe out of distraction, or maybe on purpose.

Something always comes along, and it is almost never what you budgeted for. Often it is so much better.

A bit like that net, knotted by hand, loop after loop, without any grand design. And yet, it held against the sea.
